1911 French Organize Greek Army

1961 Anti-Castro Cubans Invade
Anti-Castro Cubans launched a full scale invasion of their homeland today [April 17]. Landings by both air and sea were reported on at least three parts of the island. Prime Minister Fidel Castro declared a national state of emergency and took personal command of Cuban defense forces. Monitored radio broadcasts heard in the United States indicated that the invaders had penetrated to within 100 miles of Havana. First indications were that casualties were heavy. Rebel troops swarmed ashore shortly after midnight in the swampy area around the Bahia de Cochinos (the Bay of Pigs) in southern Las Villas Province. Two other landings — at Baracoa in Oriente province, and at Cabanas, in Pinar del RioFind brand shoes to trade Province — also were reported. It was unknown how many rebel troops participated in the attacks, although one anti-Castro source said it involved “several thousand” men. Mr. Castro acknowledged the invasion of Las Villas Province. He made no mention of the other two points at which the rebels said they landed.
